Song of the Week- Beating Heat by Ellie Goulding, from the Divergent: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

In today’s world, movie soundtracks are just as important to a movie franchise as the films themselves. Teen franchises definitely lead the way in this respect, and being no stranger to this trend after featuring on the latest soundtracks for the Twilight series and Hunger Games series, British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has lent a hand to the latest big teen film and future film franchise, Divergent. The soundtrack is to feature three songs from Goulding, including new cut Beating Heart. Upon hearing this new track I was immediately captivated, and can see why it would fit into a moody teenage film franchise piece. The song finds Goulding singing of how there is difficulty within life, but in the end she just wants to make the best of the moment and wants to hear her lovers beating heart. There is a dynamic quality to the lyrics in the way that Goulding delivers a poetic style whilst making the song sound very accessible and catchy. Goulding’s vocal performance is lush with a delicacy and lilting quality that is both passionate and chilled and brings out the emotion of the lyrics very nicely. The vocal performance also works great against the production with its sea of ambient synths and pulsating electronic rhythms. Beating Heart is a powerful number that feels like a worthy edition to this new film soundtrack, and a song that also just works on its own merit.
