Song of the Week-
Birthday by Katy Perry, from the album Prism
With Christmas fast approaching, a lot of music acts have
been releasing record in the last quarter of the year to really maximise their
sales. Out of a lot of the releases that I have heard, there is one song that I
keep finding myself going back to, and that is Birthday by Katy Perry. Birthday
is just a stunner of a track that is pop brilliance and which must, must
be a future single from the album Prism. Lyrically the track is a sugary sweet,
double entendre filled tune with a massive, gets stuck in your head so easily
chorus in which Perry basically tells her man that with her sensuality and love
and she will make it like his birthday every day. Perry utilises her falsetto
to awesome effect within the song, giving us a really cute, airy texture to the
track that perfectly captures the lyrical message and intensifies the tracks
appeal tremendously. And producers Dr Luke and Max Martin do a stellar job with
the tracks sound, giving us a Mariah Carey like tune featuring saxophone blasts
and an all-round light texture that is snappy and fun and just creates this
amazing pop jam that you can’t help but love.
