Song of the Week- Goodness
Gracious by Ellie Goulding, from the album Halcyon Days
Ellie Goulding really did have a great year in 2013, scoring
her first number 1 single with ‘Burn’ and continuing to rise as one of today’s
biggest pop stars. The singer has definitely kicked things off for 2014 very nicely
with the release of Halcyon Days track Goodness Gracious as the third single
from the re-release of her second album. As it has been given the single
treatment, my joy from the song has risen again, and it has become one of those
songs that is constantly on a loop on my Ipod. The song itself is a psychedelic
slice of synth pop with bubbling synths and quirky vocals, with the song
lyrically focusing on Goulding understanding that it is wrong for her to use
this boy who she keeps calling up late at night but who she won’t enter into a
relationship with, yet she just can’t help herself. Co-written by producer Greg
Kurstin and fun. frontman Nate Ruess, the song is lyrically a fine tuned piece
with an instantly catchy chorus but with verses that delve a bit deeper into this
chaotic idea of a relationship that Goulding quite poetically presents. What is
really interesting about the song is the way that the lyrics are quite sharp
but sweet, and there is also an element of twistedness and darkness to the
lyrical concept. Yet the song itself is a big shiny number led by clattering
synth notes for a light, summery sort of vibe that you will definitely want to
move around to. Vocally the piece is also interesting through the way that
Goulding contrasts the languid delivery of the verses with a fast paced, snappy
chorus, and the chorus is also really interesting in the way that Auto Tune is
used, being an effective tool that adds an extra layer of impact to the song.
This was a brilliant choice of a single, and you should also check out the
brilliant, bright music video that goes with the track.
