Song of the Week- Rather Be by Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne

In 2013 I became aware of Clean Bandit but wasn’t really sold on their music. That is until I heard Rather Be, a great slice of deep house music that is also different from other tracks in the genre. This is because the group infuse the dance beats and squiggly synth notes with classical music, with the stirrings strings and lovely piano line elevating the tracks ability to hold the listeners attention and marking the group as much more interesting than some of their peers. The song is also great in that whilst you may not think that house music and classical music should work, Clean Bandit brilliantly show you with ease that these two genres can really work well together. The lyrics are immediately catchy and simple as guest feature Jess Glynne sings of how when she is with this person there is no other place she would want to be. The message is really sweet and simple with the chorus having that immediate effect of getting stuck in your head. The verses are also quirky with some of the lyrics, and there is this almost cool narrative feel to the lyrics that keeps you invested within the track. Glynne is a brilliant guest vocalist on the record, with her sharp but also sweet, powerful but also light vocal performance being the perfect addition to the song and making it the full package of a really great track. Rather Be is destined to be a hit song in 2014, and now I can finally say that I am fully on board with the buzz surrounding Clean Bandit.
